As the election fever is catching up in Andhra Pradesh, ‘the writing on the wall’ is becoming increasingly clear. Yet another survey has predicted that the YSRCP of YS Jagan, the ruling party in the state, is set to benefit more from the BJP’s alliance with the TDP and Janasena. This is the second straight survey within days of the three parties formally announcing their coming-together for the elections in the state.
Even as the BJP, TDP and Janasena are grappling with the contentious issue of seat-sharing among them, they received a second successive bolt from the blue in the form of a Janmath group survey report. The popular psephology group conducted its exercise in Andhra Pradesh, especially to gauge the popular mood in the aftermath of the BJP entry into the alliance. The objective of the survey was to explore if the alliance dynamics have really influenced prevailing mood on the ground and altered the public perception on who should be voted to power.
Interestingly, the Janmath survey findings revealed that the YSRCP, currently riding on a wave of YS Jagan’s burgeoning popularity, would win 119-122 Assembly seats in the ensuing elections. This significantly marks an increase in seats from its own earlier survey conducted in the state a few weeks ago. In its previous survey, the group predicted that the ruling party would be able to win anywhere between 114-117 Assembly seats.
As per its report, more number of the electorate favoured the YSRCP after the BJP joined the TDP-Janasena alliance. This strongly indicates a complete polarisation of the minorities, most of whom are already aligned with the YSRCP. The TDP-BJP-Janasena combine, on the other hand, is projected to win only 49-51 Assembly seats.
As per Janmath’s latest survey report, the YSRCP is also set to win 19-20 Lok Sabha seats while the opposition alliance may wrest 4-6 seats.
The Janmath report comes close on the heels of the Aatma Sakshi survey report which echoed a similar public mood in the aftermath of the BJP joining the TDP, Janasena alliance. The Aatma Sakshi survey found out that the YSRCP vote share would soar to 49 percent as opposed to the 48 percent that it was expected to garner before the opposition alliance with the BJP. It predicted that the ruling party in the state would win 115-122 Assembly seats.
While the latest findings of Janmath came in as a shot in the arm for the cadre of the ruling party, the news was received with a sense of déjà vu by the TDP and Janasena camps. The two parties are already in a state of disarray, with their newest alliance partner BJP assuming a tough posturing on the allocation of seats to it.
